Ever since I can remember I have felt a connection to the ocean and advocated for its health and all of its inhabitants. Despite growing up in landlocked Saskatchewan, I was writing essays on dolphins getting stuck in drift nets when I was 11 years old!
I am not sure where this connection came from, but I believe all of us have it in us considering the ocean is where we originally came from and also provides 70% of the oxygen we breathe.
In my business and personal life, I try to make the greenest choices that I possibly can such as using recyclable/biodegradable shipping supplies, purchasing local, organic and natural products, composting, recycling, walking instead of driving, eating a mostly veg diet, using minimal utilities at home and in my studio and making eco friendly products. There is so much work to be done and I sometimes feel frustrated that I am not out there doing more!
So, I have decided to give 1% of the sale of each product you purchase online here to two organizations near and dear to my heart.
Ric O'Barry has dedicated the last 40 years of his life to putting an end to dolphin exploitation and slaughter. Dolphins are regularly captured, harassed, slaughtered and sold into captivity around the world – all in the name of profit. The Dolphin Project works not only to halt these slaughters, but also to rehabilitate captive dolphins, investigate and advocate for economic alternatives to dolphin slaughter exploitation, and to put a permanent end to dolphin captivity.
Ric O'Barry was also featured in the Academy Award winning documentary, The Cove, about the brutal slaughter of the Taiji dolphins in Japan that still goes on every year, despite public outcry from around the world.
How it affects you: without sharks, our ecosystem is in danger of becoming imbalanced. The fish that sharks prey on will overpopulate, eating the plankton that oxygenates the planet. We really need that oxygen!
